Thanks for developing this article. It provides a good analysis of shoulders.

Default Shoulder Question - 04-14-2009, 01:14 AM

Hi Michael,

How are you? Hope it gets warm soon for you. I have a question about the shoulder motion as a "unit" or two seperate entities? Is it true to state that the Left shoulder (for a right hander) actually outurns/ travels farther than the right? I have read that the right shoulder actually only turns "45 degrees about the same amount as the hips, and the left shoulder turns 90 degrees", relatively speaking. This make since 2 me, and I feel this is what I do, but wanted to get your opinion on it. Stay Warm.

VJ,
Great question, I don't think it matters all that much whether you see them as a unit or separate . They move in different directions at times however and the left shoulder does have the longest route to travel indeed. The amount of movement of each always depends on the pattern !!!

Hi Michael,
Great article. On Page 3, I am definitely Picture #2. The difference seems so slight to me. Regardless, how or what do I have to do in order to look like Picture #3?

Thanks,

PM666,

Welcome to the site, the difference looks subtle but is huge for the geometry and precision of your pattern. I would recommend incorporating this indoor tip I made last winter, there is a drill in here where the club is across the throat line.... it will help you a lot... here is a quick link to the tip:

Thanks - I've tried this drill before and it's pretty good. I don't think my takeaway and backswing had as level of a turn though. I think I was more top of left shoulder points at the ball on the backswing and top of right shoulder points at the ball on the downswing and impact which I guess is incorrect?

Do you "pinch" your shoulder blades together which sort of pushes your chest out which in turn makes your shoulders straight and expands them? Really hard to describe this, I'm sure you know what I am trying to say.

Thanks again,
p

P,
When flattening out the shoulder turn on the way back, it will never quite achieve the total flatness like in the drill because under a golf swing motion arms, hands, and club, are involved and are lifting up. A lot of great players have a steeper shoulder turn. How much the left arm swings across the chest vs lifts will effect the flatness / steepness of the shoulder turn. As for pinching your shoulders back, I understand what you are saying because I do it all the time at the gym when I am working out my back, it would only be necessary to train in if someone really shrugs shoulders forward or up. What in your pattern makes you think you should flatten out the shoulder turn?
