My son is 9 and is getting into the game a bit. He has a nice swing, but has developed a bit of a hook with some pushes. Having been afflicted with a too far right path forever, I know what he is going through.

Any thoughts on how to help a junior? He swings so freely, I certainly don't want to introduce any mechanical thoughts. On the other hand, I don't want him to get discouraged.

    Thanks. Bob

    Bob,

Great to hear he has taken a liking to golfing. I would encourage a junior to learn to square the face -

The more the junior can train to 'line' the club face for impact the more they are going to enjoy the game and develop a proper path.

I would take a look at his grip first... sounds like the grip & club face are not matching up well. Take a picture of the grip or swing and we will take a look

Bob, I would not be quite so hesitant to introduce some basic mechanical issues. I have never taught golf to kids that age, but have taught baseball and hockey. Around that age, there are some basic mechanics that every sport requires. Frankly, the biggest problem I had with some kids is that they saw such improvements from what was taught, that they wanted a "quick fix" for EVERYTHING.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. We played 9 on Sunday and things were better. I hadn't thought about checking his grip, but I will. He loves any sport, so I want him to keep golf in the rotation. I'll see if I can post a vid. One thing I do know, he's got a freewheeling pivot right now. Last thing I want to do is slow him down! When he's older, you won't be able to compete if you can't hit it long.
