I apologize if there has already been on a thread on this topic but I could not find one.

    Mike,

How important is grip size?? You hear varying opinions out there, some teachers claim its whatever feels best and some say it is one of the most important components to a good swing. What is your feeling on the topic?

    Thanks

    RW3,

Good to see you at the PGA show, too bad we didn't have a chance to walk around a little. Good question on grip size, here are some of my thoughts:

    1. What the golfer likes

    2. The larger the grip the more the weight distribution of the club will change

    3. The larger the grip the more difficult it may become to get the handle under the heel pad of hand

A lot of times people like the initial feel of a thicker grip as the club feels more secure. However, over a period of time they start to sense a feeling of being clumsy dealing with the larger grip and a loss of club head feel

Thanks for the insight Mike. Since there is no real way to try out different grip sizes, without completely regripping our clubs, do you have any suggestions on how we know if changing the grip size may help or hurt us?

Honestly club fitting is all trial and error. Shaft fitting programs give a roundabout corridor to select shafts from but ultimately it is up to what the player feels and likes couple with Launch Parameters and Descent Angles of the ball.

My recommendation would be to take a couple of your clubs to a golf shop and have different grips and sizes put on some clubs and then head to the range and try them out. If you do like 4 or 5 clubs its an inexpensive little experiment.
