We all know about the historic love affair with golf and Japan. Here are some facts about when it started and one of its early heros:

Golf in Japan dates back to around 1903 when some British residents built themselves a 9 hole course. The 1st course founded by the Japanese was the Tokyo Golf Club in 1914.

By the early 1920's there were 7 golf clubs in Japan and they organized the Japan Golf Association... they adopted the same rules as the Royal and Ancient in Europe.

In 1924, they played their first Amateur Championship and in 1927 they played their first Japan Open Championship.

The first Open Championship in 1927 was won by one of the 1st Japanese Golfing Icons:

Interesting. My wife is Asian and we usually visit her family in the Philippines annually. I have met several Japanese golfers there. They are absolutely addicted to the sport. They are also insanely jealous of how affordable golf is in the USA.
