Equipment Question

Hi Mike, I have an equipment question. With my irons my miss is usually a 5-15 yard pull. I almost never hook them (almost never being not once all summer).

Default Equipment Question - 08-02-2010, 02:34 PM

Hi Mike,

I have an equipment question. With my irons my miss is usually a 5-15 yard pull. I almost never hook them (almost never being not once all summer). I also do not hit hooks with my driver. However, right when I pick up my #3 or #4 hybrid my pulls are instantly worse (20-50 yards), and I often hit huge hooks with them. All of my clubs are the same flex (r) and all are Taylor Made. I was told the hybrids have some offset, but I think I have what you would consider game improvement irons (R7) so I think there is a little offset in there. I am about a 5 handicap, so I am a decent playing, but I just cannot figure this out.

So, my question is do I have some faulty equipment or is there a significant change needed when hitting the hybrids?

Swing O,
Couple of questions for you:
Have you looked into the club face alignment, sounds like the a very closed off club face ??

Are your contacts towards the toe of the iron or hybrid??

How much palm up or down are your left and right hands on the club?

I have looked into clubface alignment, but that is what confuses me. I do not make any conscious changes in my patter at all. I can be at the range and stripe 20 perfect five irons and then pick up the hybrid with what feels like the same swing and it hooks off the course.

My grip is slightly stronger than neutral (maybe 10 degrees). Neutral being the face is flat to my wrist when holding it up.

I would say when I do miss it is more towards the toe.

I know this is tough without video. I was just trying to figure out if there should be a different pattern or approach with the hybrid.

Thanks!

Hard to figure out w/o seeing your swing. But one problem could be the lie angles. There are bending machines now that will bend hybrid lie angles. I don't know how well they work, but with irons you can get the lie angles to fit you pretty easily and most people tend to do that. But with hybrids, very few people bend the lie angles.

Would the lie angle being to flat or upright cause a hook?
