Hey I hear you guys are very respected at Rock Hill so I thought I would ask you this question - I am a 3 Handicap, my driver swing speed is around 105, I currently use the Callaway IZ tour ball and although my swing and game has never been better I am getting less distance off my driver over the past year or 2. I'm only 33 so its not an age thing, but 2 years ago I was hitting the ball 280+, now I'm around 240-260.

I really think it's the ball but the are SO MANY balls out there I don't know what to try. I also use the Pro V1x from time to time with similar results and I was reading that these premium balls are for guys whos swing speeds are around 115 so Im curious I guess if a lower compression ball would be a better choice for me to give me more distance.

Any suggestions or ideas would be fantastic - thanks for your time

    Frank,

Thanks for the email and as you can see I have inserted it into my forum/blog because it is an interesting question.

Let's examine an obvious point: Can a golf ball effect distance? Without question if you where to head out and hit a variety of golf balls you would see some type of slight variance in distance - slight variance in dimple depth which can effect spin to some extent - a major difference in the 'feel' of the golf balls from a player's perception

Will a golf ball gain or lose a major amount of distance? 20 - 40 yards? A range ball maybe but not in a Pro V or Callaway Premium ball switch. The premium golf balls should not vary in the amount of 20-40 yards.

If your distance off the tee is reducing, I would start to take note of how the golf ball is launching. I would also take a look into your Ball Speed in conjunction with the club head speed and look at the ratio and you will get a good indication of the solidness of contact. We can take the Club speed - Ball Speed - and match it to a desirable launch by either swing adjustments, or a driver adjustment.

You should look into a Flightscope Session:

    Lesson Programs & Pricing
Launch monitor and ball tracking - FlightScope 3D doppler golf radar

I would try a ball like the Bridgestone B330 RX or RXS or Srixon XV, your swing speed will match up better with these balls.
Call Mike about a fitting on Flightscope to find out the details of your swing. Once you get your club delivery and launch numbers he will be able to give you a definite recommendation for your golf game.

I use the Bridgestone B330-S. Bridgestone golf balls have been and continue to be a hot item for us. We are going to sell Srixon later this year, and have sold Titleist and Nike golf balls in the past.

My non scientific answer is that what a player feels during contact is important feedback to them. The softer feel/compressed against the face type of contact is what low handicap golfers look for because they associate this with a more controlled shot with irons and extra jump off the face with the driver.

Penta seems to be ideal for me. NXT Extreme if I know a hole location will probably want a pitch and run approach. We hackers get to play different balls if we choose.

    ALCON,

    R/
RA Always played the PRO V1 great ball for approach shots and short game play for me, I am an aggressive short game shot type a guy love to take it at the hole with spin.

However my new ball is the Srixon XV its longer off the Driver and woods and higher launch, lower spin, but what I gain in distance and more short irons into the greens, but around the greens it just doesn’t react well to my aggressive short game style more of a pitch and run type ball or I haven't been able to get them to spin like the PRO V1.....

So what I am doing now is a test on shorter course with firm greens that are fast I have been using the PRO V1 and on Longer courses the Srixon XV.... Just cant seems to figure it out... My strength has always been my short game ... so I guess I need the ball that’s better for the short game..?

But Good golf is Power golf now a days and off the irons I gain 8 yards of Carry and on the driver about 11 yards of carry and also more roll because of the lower spin with the Srixon XV.... cant ignore those numbers tested on trackman to verify what my on course test told me... what do you all think?

Doesnt the golf ball have to do with your swing speed . Harder the ball for low swing speed and and the amount of compression suited for you?
