Joe,
Good questions...
I would say that a lot of great players do use a slightly palm down left hand. 'Pop' golf instruction deems a palm down left hand as a 'strong grip'
I think that the term strong has been counter productive for golfers and they would benefit more from seeing it as palm neutral, palm down, or palm up.
With that said, palm neutral to slightly palm down would be a great starting point for most golfers.
As for a 'weak' right hand grip? That would mean that the right palm would be down. I don't see too many great players with a palm down right hand on the club, I see many great players with their right palm on the side of the club in pretty neutral location.
Next question on putting, how much luck is involved outside of 10 feet??
If you surf the net for data and interpretations of the data, you will see some varying percentages on the successes of holing putts from different distances. Massachusetts Institute of Technology performed a very nice analysis in determining how to statistically determine the best putters... here is an excerpt of their findings:
From 10 feet, the average number of putts that Tour pros take is 1.63.
At around 30 feet, average starts exceeding 2.
From 40, the average is 2.15."
