I decided to make a follow up discussion about Codman's Paradox and it's correlation to a lot of the information presented by Michael Jacobs at the Flightscope Convention and GTE

    Enjoy:

    Enjoy:

    Steve,

So, from a swing building aspect
you are saying to focus attention on the two biggest contributors of clubhead speed, alpha and beta torque and because of codman's paradox the golfer should not concern themselves with the twist torque?

    Hello Matt
Thanks for the inquiry. My feeling is that the muscle groups identified through the codman's paradox handle rotation of the golf club without a student feeling rotation (the majority at least). The "gamma" torque" is simply necessary to angle the club to match the plane the club will be delivered. And just like codman's principle affects the back swing, it will do the same on the forward swing. Relative to a students sense of feel, I believe a rotation of the club through the wrists can have a very significant affect on utilization of the bigger muscles utilized in the codman's movements. Therefore, rotation of the club wrists or forearms I feel can hurt a player. Hope that helps explain the video better.

    Hey Steve:

Thanks for contributing with your videos, they are very interesting and enlightening.
It seems Codman's paradox goes well with the three torques.

I attended the GTE and Michael discussed the various torques as you recapped.
Unfortunately I was unable to attend the Flightscope Conference.

Was there, or is there, a cocking of the wrist torque? Is that the "beta" torque. Up and down?

It seems that the "alpha" torque has a lot to do with the well timed release of the coupling point and/or the flick.

Perhaps Michael can chime in to.

    Hey Matt

I think at the GTE Michael was recommended minimzing the Gamma torque (the screw driver type motion) and concentrating on the downswing-first portion use the beta then second portion use the alpha.

    Thanks
    Ed

Wrist set torque would be the beta torque. "Screwdriver" is a great description of the torque that is almost negligible.

    Great stuff!
