Default Above Plane - 10-23-2009, 04:36 PM

MJ,

Could the above the rt shouldwer on the backswing and below the left shoulder on the downsing also be used for someone like me who tends to be above plane.

I am thinking it might help to promote a straight line delivery especially the downswing part finishing under the left shoulder.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Mike,

Nice tip, I remember that hole! Definitely a scary one for a below planer.

I might add that a player that has this problem may also want to control how much down they hit on this ball as the more down they hit the more their path will be in to out which could increase their hook.

The other thing to add is for a player that may not have taken a 2 day school from you and Brian and practiced the correct move and finds themselves at that kind of hole. They want to make sure that their club face is more open (open to the target) so that it is less closed to the path when they strike the ball creating more of a draw at the pin instead of a hook left of the pin.

Having the "tools in the shed", however, to perform that shot Mike was showing, is a fantastic compliment to a lower handicaps game and will give them more green lights to get more birdies!

Mike,

Thanks for another vid. After watching this, I wonder if I've over-corrected myself again. I now hit almost every drive on the heel, resulting in a weak cut that goes nowhere. I used to know that toe-hook shot well.

I'm bummed that I never made it out to the Island this fall - but - maybe I can figure out how to post a swing and get your thoughts on where I stand.

By the way, the following is from Tom Watson. He advocates swinging left. I don't know this stuff well enough to know if he was ever under plane, but it sure seems that he is sold on the idea of swinging left.

MY SWING might look the same as it always has, but it really isn't. I don't have the extension I once had. The width of my arc is not what it used to be. My left arm bends a little bit now. I learned how to swing the golf club for real in 1994. I had some success before then, but in 1994, that's when I found the key. Like Sam Snead said, we all have our keys. If one key stops working, you go to the next key. I found the key at 3:15 during practice on a Tuesday afternoon at the Heritage Classic, 1994, Hilton Head, South Carolina. That's when I found the secret. My attack into the ball. I didn't win that week, but I knew I had found it. I was tired of hitting the ball with toe-deep divots out to the right. I decided to swing like Corey Pavin's practice swing. Swing to the left through impact.

AS SOON AS I DID THAT, I hit the ball perfect. Divots were square, and I had a different feeling with my right shoulder. It wasn't as low coming into the ball. It all had to do with shoulder plane, keeping it the same on the downswing as it was on the backswing. I had always practiced my backswing. Then, out of frustration, I found something that worked.[/i][/b]

Mike,
I'm wth jlgenson, the tip of "over the right shoulder on the backswing and under the left shoulder on the follow-through" should work whether you are below plane or above plane, correct?
On a separate topic, I've always said that if I could control the face, I'd be "deadly". Any idea why it is so impossible for me?
Thanks,
p

You made that video. You should have had me model it for you.

One quick question, I've been having a lot of success trying to swing down on the Turned Shoulder Plane, because it seems as though I got on top of the plane.

Awesome video, looks like you were wearing ski clothes (it's not that cold here yet).

Best regards,
Wayne

I can't tell you how well this fix worked for me today while on the course. The local muni has a play all day special on Mondays that I just can't pass up. I always play my best golf on the first 18 and get lazier with my swing as the day goes on. I can remember a specific "digest" article that stuck with me that specifically talked about finishing below the left shoulder to ensure a draw which I'm scared to death of because I live in hooksville. I thought I had flushed out all the old ball flight laws but they still find a way to creep in. I'm a chronic under planer and this move worked wonders for me, even a few 5 yard fades. I'm sure it helped move my path more toward zero.
