Mike,

can you provide a definition on what a Cut Shot is?

from what I can see on the video, it looks like a flop shot, but you mentioned the flop shot will be a separate video.

Thanks.

TP,

We all know golf has different terms and all kinds of descriptions and no set terminology. We as teachers have all of our different terms and explanations, a cut shot is best to be seen as being similar to a slice shot. Swing direction going left while the club face lays back and puts a cutting motion on the ball and creates side spin with a spin axis that tilts right. A flop shot would have much more a standard swing direction.

These of course are just how I define them in my teaching, someone may describe them completely differently. Hope that helps you

I think a cut shot is much different from a slice shot. I think the difference is speed. To me a slice comes from a full shot where the speed of the clubhead imparts so much spin that the ball flight is affected dramatically.

I think of cut shots as smaller shots played primarily with wedges where the speed is much less and the shot object is lofting the ball so it has a more vertical trajectory or runs much less once it lands.

I like to play little cut shots when pitching and chipping to land the ball softly like carrying a bunker to a tight pin. I might also play a cut chip with an 8 iron to play a soft runner. If I'm in between wedges from the fairway I will open the longer wedge and loft the ball a little to get the desired distance.

I believe I cut my woods when I`m in deeper grass opening my face to get out, doing basically the same thing. If I dont open my face I dont get out of the deep grass very well.... Good video mike, no excellent video.....You solved how I can hit a cut shot at the TARGET very well.....joe

OK, I went to the range to try the cut shot. When I open the face slightly and open my body so the face faces the target its very hard to do. I feel like the club head is way in front of me. In other words I have a tough time to get the face to face the target. Am Iodoing something wrong?....joe

Joe,

I will take a wedge, open the face so it points towards the target, then I will grip the club with the face open like that. I will aim my body slightly left of the pin, maybe 3-5 yards, then I will swing along my body line. Don't let the club release, keep the face open. The ball will fly higher and won't travel as far and will probably spin to the right once it lands. It's a shot you have to trust, that it will work properly. Swing the club with some speed, don't get lazy with it or you'll end up with what looks like a shank.

That's what I do. I'm sure Michael has a specific way he teaches that shot.

Ben Thats not the way mike did the video. He turn the face open then moves his body so the face faces the target. You turn the face open and then grip he doesnt (I think).

Yeah, I didn't mention that once I open the face and regrip I do aim the face at the target with my body aimed left. I was stating more how I grip the club and setup more than anything. Thanks for noticing I left out the target.

I see the pros hit a low pitch shot into the green which stops after a bounce or two. they seem to use a lob wedge, and slide the club under the ball, while keeping the trajectory low. How do they hit this shot, what is it called?
Thanks.
